Comprehensive Psychoeducational Assessments
"Solve what years of psychotherapy can't."
We understand that navigating learning challenges with schools is complex. Our approach is designed to provide clarity and a clear path forward for our clients.
Our comprehensive psychoeducational assessments work to identify our clients specific learning strengths and challenges, before kids give up. Most students do not know what is standing between "Proficiency" and "Developing" or "Emerging" ratings on report cards.
Parents feel frustration with the lack of clear solutions to solve their child's learning problems. We know that frustration can extend to all areas of family life and how distressing that can be.
We take this very seriously, because the research is clear, undiagnosed learning disability such as dyslexia, anxiety or high functioning autism can be debilitating, and undermine self-esteem and willingness to venture into future challenges such as post secondary education. This lack of confidence can limit employment choices, future earning capacity, and overall life satisfaction if not identified and treated early.
Undiagnosed ADHD, severe anxiety, or high functioning autism can leave students socially isolated or with significant difficulties forming relationships later in life, resulting in a life of isolation.
I have 30 years as an experienced leader in school psychology in over 30 schools in Coquitlam, Burnaby, West Vancouver, 10 years as a private practitioner serving metro Vancouver, 5 years as a UBC university professor, instructor teaching (EPSE 526 and EPSE 316) specialist teachers from BC and metro Vancouver how to utilize evidence based interventions in schools.
We carefully review all report cards and previous assessments, and carry out a detailed structured medical and developmental history using the Q Global BASC structured interview system via online delivery to you.
We observe and record each client's diagnostic findings and behaviour during the 6 hours of individualized assessment to clearly identify strengths and any difficulties a child, adolescent, or adult learner might be experiencing.
We make referrals for and more specialized assessments if required such as for autism, speech language, audiology, cognitive therapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy or sometimes specialized programs for self-harm or for psychiatry.
Our comprehensive psychoeducational assessments are designed to identify our client's cognitive strengths, we have so many students who are identified as gifted and have been underachieving in school due to boredom or a an undiagnosed fine motor problem which interferes with written output.
Teachers, the student and parent are often not aware of this without the comprehensive assessment.
We build academic self-confidence in our clients by identifying strengths and making sure they understand the client understands their strengths.
We confirm any other problems that can interfere with learning such as weak attention, distractibility, executive functioning, behavioural, emotional or processing differences that can slow learning down.
We provide you a clear interpretation of data and translate that into practical recommendations tailored
to each client whether it is a child, adolescent, or adult learner.
We create optimal evidence based learning contexts for your child.
Helping children, adolescents, and adults understand their strengths is our first goal. Understanding that learning, attention, memory, and academic and emotional challenges can be accommodated for, is our second goal.
We design the steps so students with learning disabilities have access to an equal education.
Our clients flourish in school and feel confident during examinations.

Continuity, Expertise, and Professional Oversight
At Psychoeducational Assessment Centre for BC, your child’s assessment is conducted by a Registered Psychologist with expertise in school and psychoeducational assessment training at UBC.
Dr. MacKinnon McQuarrie has taught graduate level courses for the Special Education Cohort of Teachers in the Lower Mainland and BC for Evidence based Interventions for Learning Disabilities. She also taught the undergraduate level courses on Learning Disabilities at the University of British Columbia for new teachers.
She also was the high school department head for French and Girls PE, coached grade 8, 9, 10s in high school track and field, basketball, volleyball. She coordinated and led federally funded trips to Quebec and back to Vancouver for BC high school students to attend Winter Festival to advance French cultural and linguistic learning and for the partner students from Quebec to come to Vancouver to expand their knowledge of Vancouver.
At PACBC the same psychologist follows your child’s case from intake through testing, interpretation, report writing, feedback, and recommendations. This continuity allows for a deeper understanding of your child’s learning profile and ensures consistency for your child throughout the assessment process.
Some clinic models divide responsibilities among multiple staff members.
We believe the child and parents benefit from direct involvement with the assessing registered school psychologist at every stage of the process.
We view the behaviour during testing as a very rich source of information to observe as it informs us how the child solves problems and retrieves information.
Our assessments are grounded in extensive training, internships, years of experience in school psychology, learning differences, child development, and educational planning.
